Being Known by God: Moving Beyond the Motions

Have you ever tried to get into an exclusive event only to be told "you're not on the list"? That sinking feeling when the door doesn't open, when your name doesn't grant you access? Now imagine the relief when someone from inside steps forward and says, "They're with me."

This is the picture of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. It's not just about what we know or who we know—it's about who knows us.

The Difference Between Knowing About God and Being Known by Him

There's a sobering truth in Matthew 7:23 where Jesus says, "I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers." These aren't words spoken to those who rejected God outright. They're addressed to people who performed miracles, cast out demons, and did mighty works in His name. They knew the language. They knew the motions. But they didn't know Him—and He didn't know them.

This is the critical distinction: you can know church without knowing Christ. You can check all the boxes, attend all the services, speak all the right words, and still live at a surface level. Real relationship—the kind that transforms you from the inside out—requires more than familiarity. It requires intimacy.

Access Through Jesus

First Timothy 2:5 reminds us that "there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus." You don't gain entrance to the Father based on your resume or your achievements. You get in because of who you belong to.

It's never been about who you are, but whose you are.

When we truly belong to Christ, when we're known by Him, He becomes our advocate before the Father. Like someone vouching for you at that exclusive event, Jesus says, "They're one of ours." That's the power of being known.

The Identity Crisis We Don't Have to Have

When God knows your name, you have an identity crisis no more. Isaiah 43:1 declares, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine."

It doesn't matter what labels others have placed on you. It doesn't matter if they said you'd never amount to anything or if they keep defining you by yesterday's mistakes. God has called you by name. You are His.

People's opinions shift like sand. Their value of you can change from day to day. But God's opinion of you has never wavered and never will. He doesn't leave you or forsake you. His assessment of your worth remains constant.

First Peter 2:9 puts it beautifully: "You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession." Not mediocre. Not subpar. Not below average. Special. Chosen. Set apart.

Learning to Hear His Voice

John 10:3 tells us that "the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out." But how can we recognize His voice if we're drowning it out with everything else?

If you spend more time on podcasts than in His word, how will you know His voice? If social media consumes more of your attention than prayer, how will you discern His leading? If the news gets more of your mental energy than Scripture, how will you distinguish His truth from the world's noise?

We suffocate the Spirit by piling on everything that gratifies the flesh. We need to protect our ear gates—to be selective about what we allow in so we can clearly hear what God is speaking out.

This means setting boundaries. Not everyone deserves access to your inner circle. Not everyone needs to know everything. Protecting your peace isn't being rude; it's being wise. It's refusing to cast your pearls before swine.

Walking in Authority and Provision

When you're known by God, you don't just gain identity—you gain authority. Luke 10:19 declares, "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you."

This authority doesn't come from our own strength but from our alignment with Him. We're not powerful on our own—we're covered. And that covering makes all the difference.

If God feeds the birds of the air and clothes the flowers of the field, how much more will He provide for His special possession? Matthew 6:26 asks, "Are you not much more valuable than they?" Philippians 4:19 promises that "God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."

But here's the honest truth: sometimes we mishandle the provision. We pray for financial blessings while complaining about our jobs. We ask for better health while eating fast food daily. We want answers but won't open the Book.

God meets needs. He provides solutions. But success happens when preparation meets opportunity. Are we preparing? Are we positioning ourselves to receive what we're asking for?

The Evidence of Being Known

Deuteronomy 28:13 promises that "the Lord will make you the head, not the tail... you will always be at the top, never at the bottom." But notice the condition: "if you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God... and carefully follow them."

Sometimes we're waiting on God when He's actually waiting on us to move. We hide our fear behind the mask of patience, but God is saying, "The door is open. Will you walk through?"

When you're known by God, you live differently:

  • You live covered, not insecure

  • You live called, not aimless

  • You live confident, not afraid

You don't live in fear of the enemy because you know he has no power over your all-powerful God. You walk with the boldness of a roaring lion—not prideful in yourself, but bold in Christ.

The Most Important Question

Luke 13:25-27 paints a sobering picture of people knocking on the door, claiming they ate and drank with Jesus and heard His teaching, only to hear Him say, "I don't know you or where you come from."

The scariest question isn't whether you know God. It's whether He knows you. Will Jesus stand before the Father and say, "They're with me"?

This isn't because God doesn't want to know us. He desperately does. The question is: are we allowing Him to know us? Are we opening our hearts to Him daily—not just when we need something, but simply because there's no greater feeling than being unconditionally loved by someone who only has your best interest at heart?

Remaining in the Vine

John 15:4 gives us the secret: "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."

God doesn't want you checking off boxes or chasing titles. He wants real, intimate relationship. He wants consistent communion. He wants to spend time with you like a loving father simply desires to be with his children.

The relationship is individual as much as it is collective. You have to choose to pick up your cross daily. You have to choose to communicate with Him daily. He doesn't just want to see you on Sundays—He wants every day.

Because when you're truly known by Him, everything changes. Not just eternity, but right now. Your life cannot remain the same when you allow the transforming, redeeming, restoring God to rest, rule, and abide inside you.

The question is simple: Will you let Him know you?
