Book of Mark: Part Eight

Discovering the Power of Jesus in Your Life

We continue our journey through the book of Mark, specifically diving into the profound teachings and miraculous events documented in Mark chapter 8. This section of the Gospel offers a tapestry of miracles, lessons of faith, and powerful symbols that continue to resonate with believers today. Let's explore together and discover the power of Jesus in your life.

Rediscovering a Miracle: Feeding the Multitude

In Mark chapter 8, we witness a repeat of a miracle initially recorded in Mark chapter 6—the feeding of the multitude. This time, however, instead of feeding 5,000 men, Jesus feeds 4,000. The numbers are slightly different, with seven loaves and a few small fish instead of five loaves and two fish. Despite these differences, the core message remains the same: Jesus provides abundantly for those in need.

Mark 6 vs. Mark 8 Feeding Miracles:

  • Mark 6: 5,000 men were fed.

  • Mark 8: 4,000 men were fed.

  • Mark 6: Five loaves and two fish.

  • Mark 8: Seven loaves and small sardines.

  • Mark 6: Twelve baskets of leftovers.

  • Mark 8: Seven baskets of leftovers.

It's essential to note that back in those days, crowds were numbered by counting only the men. If we add their wives and children, the actual number fed could easily be around 15,000 in Mark 6 and 12,000 in Mark 8.

The Significance of Repeating the Miracle

This repeated miracle teaches us two lessons:

  1. God's Fairness and Generosity: “For God shows no partiality” (Romans 2:11). Whatever God does for one, He is willing to do for anyone who believes.

  2. Human Tendency to Forget: Often, people forget the great things God has done in their lives. This repetition serves as a potent reminder to celebrate and remember God's blessings.

"Anytime that you go through a crisis, a storm, or a difficult situation you need to remind yourself how good God is, not only how good God is, but how good God has been to you."

Give God Something to Work With

One of the most powerful principles at play in these miraculous feedings is the act of giving God something to work with. The disciples could have been overwhelmed by the size of the need, but Jesus asked them to put something—anything—into His hands to facilitate the miracle.

Consider this:

  • If you have a need, plant a seed. “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness” (2 Corinthians 9:10).

God doesn't merely drop solutions from the sky. Instead, He gives us opportunities to sow small seeds that He can grow into abundant blessings.

Choose Faith Over Fear

Facing challenges requires us to choose between faith and fear. Psychologists speak of the fight or flight mechanism, and the same applies spiritually: will you fight the good fight of faith or succumb to fear?

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6)

Battling Doubt and Worry

Jesus provides multiple examples of overcoming doubt:

  • When He raised a dead girl, He first removed all doubters and surrounded Himself with faith-filled people (Mark 5:40).

  • You can't worry and worship simultaneously. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6).

"A little bit of faith in a big, big God moves mountains."

Understanding Miracles and Healing

Another interesting aspect to explore is Jesus healing a blind man. Jesus asked the man what he saw after praying for him the first time, and the man saw men like trees walking. Jesus prayed again before the man’s sight was wholly restored (Mark 8:24-25).

The Difference Between Healing and Miracles

  • Healing: Progressive improvement that might take time.

  • Miracle: Instantaneous and complete resolution.

This two-step healing illustrates the importance of persistent faith. Sometimes, our faith needs to grow and develop, illustrated by this progressive healing.

Personal Quest: Who Do You Say Jesus Is?

Perhaps one of the most direct and personal questions Jesus asked His disciples was, “Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29). This question brings us to a pivotal point in faith—understanding and declaring who Jesus is for yourself.

Public and Personal Confession

Your understanding of Jesus shapes your faith journey. “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Walk by Faith, not by Sight

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Somewhere in your journey, you will have to walk by faith even when you don’t fully understand God. Our trust in His nature and promises will carry us through uncertainties.

Encouragement for Believers

To bolster your faith, consider these:

  • Where there is a creation, there’s a creator: The intricate design of our world points to a creator.

  • Historical evidence of the resurrection: One of history's most documented events is Jesus's resurrection.

  • Signs of the times: Prophecies are being fulfilled even today.

Developing a Faith-Rich Life

Here are three takeaways to develop a robust faith:

  1. Choose faith over fear.

  2. Fight doubt with knowledge and supportive faith-filled individuals.

  3. Win over worry by staying focused on God’s promises.

Now, it’s our turn to discern and stand firm in our faith.

Embrace the Power of Jesus in Your Life

As we come to the end of Mark chapter 8, remember these critical themes—generosity, faith, and persistence. By placing our trust and small offerings in Jesus's hands, we open ourselves to witnessing His abundant provision and transformational power.

"Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33).

Let's live by faith, not by sight, and see the mountains in our lives move through the power of Jesus.

Have you been blessed by the power of Jesus in your life?
