‘Tis the Season
Finding Joy and Peace This Christmas Season
As the Christmas season unfolds, it brings a unique opportunity to reflect on joy and peace—the two foundational elements that embody the birth of Christ. This season is not just about celebrations or traditions but a profound invitation to embrace the joy and peace that Jesus offers. Let’s delve deeper into how these blessings can transform our lives during this special time of the year.
A Season of Joy
The angelic announcement at Jesus’ birth proclaimed: “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all people.” (Luke 2:10). This joy is not circumstantial but rooted in the eternal truth of Christ’s coming. It’s a joy that resonates in the hearts of believers, regardless of life's challenges.
The word “gospel” means “good news,” a reminder that our faith is fundamentally a message of hope and upliftment. Jesus himself affirmed this, saying: “I have come that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11). His mission was not just to secure a place for us in heaven but to bring heaven’s joy into our daily lives.
True joy, as described in Scripture, is the evidence of God’s presence within us. It transcends fleeting happiness and remains steadfast even amidst trials. Consider this definition: Joy is the evidence of the presence of God. When we are rooted in Christ, our lives naturally reflect this joy, becoming a beacon to those around us.
Cultivating Joy
While happiness depends on external circumstances, joy is an inward condition grounded in our relationship with God. The Bible mentions joy 330 times, emphasizing its importance far more than happiness, which appears only 26 times. This contrast reveals that God values our inner joy over external pleasure.
In John 15:5, Jesus said: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” This intimate connection is the key to sustaining joy. Much like a Christmas decoration unplugged from its power source loses its glow, we must stay connected to Jesus to experience the fullness of joy.
Take a moment to reflect on your spiritual connection. Are you “plugged in” to the source of joy, or has life’s busyness and challenges caused a disconnect? If you’re feeling a loss of joy, turn back to God, the ultimate source of renewal.
A Season of Peace
The Christmas story also heralds peace: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14). This peace isn’t reserved for the afterlife; it’s a present reality available to us here and now.
Peace with God is foundational. Through Jesus, we can reconcile with our past mistakes, finding freedom from guilt and condemnation. Additionally, the peace of God helps us navigate our relationships. Whether it’s forgiving others or extending patience, peace transforms how we interact with those around us.
Overcoming Worry to Find Peace
Worry often stands in opposition to peace. It magnifies problems and draws us away from trusting God. As the Bible teaches: “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7). In moments of doubt or fear, we are invited to cast our cares on Him, finding solace in His faithfulness.
Practical Steps to Embrace Joy and Peace
Spend Time with Jesus
Like Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet, prioritize His presence over the busyness of the season. Avoid a “Martha Christmas” filled with stress and instead pursue a “Merry Christmas” rooted in peace and joy.Let Go of Worry
Worry is worshiping the problem rather than trusting the solution. As the Psalmist says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10). Resting in God allows Him to work in our lives.Stay Grounded in the Word
Equip yourself with the promises of God, just as Roman soldiers wore cleats to hold their ground in battle. Stand firm on Scriptures that remind you of God’s peace and joy.Practice Gratitude and Praise
Praise shifts our focus from problems to God’s goodness. Celebrate what He has already done, and trust in His continued faithfulness.
A Season of Rest and Renewal
To rest in God and allow Him to work in our lives. As the speaker put it, “When we rest, God works.” This truth is echoed in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Let this be a season where we slow down, reconnect with Christ, and embrace the gifts of joy and peace that He offers.
This Christmas, let’s focus on what truly matters: the joy and peace found in Christ. Whether you’re celebrating with loved ones or navigating personal challenges, remember that Jesus is Emmanuel—God with us. May this season renew your heart and draw you closer to the One who came to bring life in its fullness.
