The God Series, Part Four: God’s Names Revealed - Your Key to Provision and Peace

Here is a popular quote: "Move me, scare me, anger me, comfort me, challenge me, teach me, but don't leave me like I was when I walk through those doors."

This quote highlights a challenge and a prayer: when we enter God's house, we should leave changed. There's a deep wish to see lives transformed and for people to be moved by the gospel, shaking off the slumber and mediocrity we often experience.

This is why it's important to continually seek and understand God's names, as they reveal His character and power.

A Desire for Transformation

We want whoever walks through the doors of our church to be moved—inspired to lift holy hands and leave saying, "I was in the presence of God today." This vision is so important it deserves a place in the office, not just for decoration but as a constant reminder of our mission. Just like a motivational sign in a locker room, this quote encourages bringing messages that move people towards experiencing God.

Thermostat vs. Thermometer

Above the office thermostat, a significant spot, there's a constant reminder: unlike a thermometer that only reflects the room's condition, a thermostat changes it. We aim to be changers, not just reflectors. We pray that God's guidance helps us bring transformative messages.

Continuing the God Series: The Names of God

While the message hasn't changed despite recent events, it remains relevant. The current series revolves around understanding God's names to better comprehend His nature and character. There are over 80 names of God in the Old Testament alone, each revealing different aspects of His character.

In Exodus 20:7, it says: "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."

When Jesus taught about prayer in Matthew 6:9, He said, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name."

To "hallow" means to make holy or to revere. When we elevate God’s name, we rise to His level, rather than dragging Him down to ours.

The Importance of God's Name

Why is God so sensitive about His name?

  1. Reputation: God's name represents His reputation, and He does not want it soiled.

  2. Character: It embodies His character, and using it in vain defames His nature.

  3. Authority: Misusing His name undermines His authority.

Using God’s name as a curse word doesn’t fix problems or improve situations. Instead, it grieves the Holy Spirit and distances one from His presence.

Psalms 9:10 states, "Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."

Misusing God’s name can undermine one’s faith and trust in Him. Therefore, it is crucial to honor and revere God’s name, recognizing the blessings that come with it.

God's Names: Jehovah Jireh — Our Provider

The first name to focus on is Jehovah Jireh, meaning “The Lord Will Provide.” James 1:17 says: "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

Acknowledging God as our provider reminds us that all good things in life come from Him. Even our ability to work and achieve success is due to God's blessings.

Philippians 4:19 promises "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."

And Psalms 20:7 says, "Come trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." Trusting in God’s name as our provider means putting our faith and hope in Him, rather than relying on material possessions or human efforts.

By trusting in Jehovah Jireh, we can have peace knowing that He will provide for us in every situation. This includes not only physical needs but also emotional and spiritual needs.

Experience in the Wilderness

God provides not just financially but in every aspect of life. For example, when the Israelites wandered the wilderness, God took them from a place of lack to a place of just enough by providing manna and a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.

Our goal should be to transition from survival mode to living in abundance by trusting in God's provision. Even in difficult times, it's crucial to remain faithful, consistently giving and tithing, trusting that Jehovah Jireh will take care of our needs.

Jehovah Shalom — Our Peace

The second name to introduce is Jehovah Shalom, meaning "The Lord Is Peace." In the tumultuous times we live in, this name is especially relevant. The political climate, acts of senseless violence, and daily challenges can cause great distress.

Philippians 4:7 promises, "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Even amid chaos, we can have peace through our relationship with God. This peace is not dependent on circumstances but on our trust in Jehovah Shalom.

The World’s Challenges and Our Peace

In today’s world, where it feels like evil is everywhere, it’s important to keep the peace that goes beyond understanding. We should stay calm during tough times and look for God’s presence to help us overcome our fears.

John 16:33 reminds us, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Our peace lies in the knowledge that God is still on the throne, no matter what happens. As we face various trials, we must choose peace over fear, trusting in God’s sovereignty.

A Prayer for Provision and Peace

If you find yourself in need of God's provision or peace today, reach out by faith and accept it as you would salvation. Whether your need is physical, spiritual, financial, emotional, or relational, trust that God, as Jehovah Jireh, will meet it. Likewise, let Jehovah Shalom calm your spirit and bring you peace.

In times of uncertainty and fear, hold onto the names and nature of God. He is our provider, our peace, and our ever-present help in times of trouble. Let these truths transform your life and elevate your faith.

Matthew 6:33 encourages us, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Stay steadfast in your faith, continue to seek God, and trust in His promises. God's provision and peace are not just theological concepts but real experiences available to every believer. Embrace them today and walk in the fullness of His blessings.
