I Witness: Part One

From Spectator to Eyewitness: Discovering Your God-Given Purpose

In every believer’s journey, there comes a moment when they are called to move from being a spectator to an eyewitness for Christ. This shift is about stepping into your God-given purpose, where you actively participate in sharing the gospel through your life and testimony.

The journey starts with following Jesus’ invitation: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17). But how do we make this shift from passive observer to purposeful witness? Let’s dive into some practical steps that can help transform your faith into action.

What Does It Mean to Be a Witness?

A witness simply shares what they know—what they’ve seen, heard, or experienced. As Christians, we are called to share the love, forgiveness, and transformation we’ve experienced through Christ.

John 3:16 tells us: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Witnessing isn’t about memorizing scripture or debating theology; it’s about sharing the impact Jesus has had on your life.

The Church’s Vision

In our walk with Christ, we are meant to grow closer through community, deeper through discipleship, and outward by reaching others. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to meet together and spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Through fellowship, we support one another, and through discipleship, we grow in our understanding of God's Word. Ultimately, this growth helps us reach out to those who have yet to experience the hope and love of Jesus.

Why Does God Leave Us Here After Salvation?

When we accept Christ, why doesn’t God take us straight to heaven? The answer lies in two key reasons:

  1. To live an abundant life: Jesus said He came so that we may have life to the full (John 10:10). God’s desire is for us to live with purpose, joy, and fulfillment here on earth.

  2. To help others find Christ: We are called to be fishers of men. Our lives are meant to point others toward Jesus, demonstrating the difference He makes through our actions and testimony.

Fishing for People: How to Share Your Faith

Much like literal fishing, sharing your faith requires patience and persistence. Just as fishermen cast their nets into the sea, we are called to cast the message of Jesus wherever we go.

Whether through small acts of kindness or direct conversations, we are planting seeds that can grow over time. The key is consistency—living a life that reflects Christ's love.

The FISH Method: A Simple Way to Witness

One practical way to share your faith is through the FISH method:

  • Find: Notice the people around you. At work, in your community, or even at the grocery store, there are always people who need a word of encouragement.

  • Invest: Build relationships. Take time to genuinely care about people’s lives, their struggles, and their stories.

  • Share: Share your personal story. You don’t need to be a preacher—just be real and authentic about what God has done for you.

  • Help: Be ready to help in whatever way you can. Whether it’s offering a prayer, lending a hand, or simply being a listening ear, your actions can open doors for deeper conversations about faith.

Consumer to Contributor in Church

Many people attend church with a consumer mentality, seeking what they can receive—whether it’s a good message, worship experience, or fellowship. However, the real transformation happens when we shift from being consumers to contributors

Ephesians 4:12 teaches that the role of the church is to equip believers for works of service. By contributing through service, we not only grow in our faith but also bless those around us.

Instead of asking, “What can I get out of church?” we should ask, “How can I serve others today?” This simple shift in mindset can lead to profound changes in our church and our personal faith journey.

Your Purpose as a Witness for Christ

Becoming an eyewitness for Christ means stepping into your role as a witness, not just passively observing the faith. Whether through the FISH method, serving in your church, or simply sharing your story, you have the opportunity to bring others closer to Jesus.

The world is full of people who need to know the hope and love that you’ve found in Christ. Now is the time to move from spectator to participant, embracing the purpose that God has for your life.
